What exactly is a fractional CFO?

A fractional CFO is a Chief Financial Officer you share. You get senior financial leadership for a fraction of the time, and a fraction of the cost, of a full time hire. The easiest way to understand the role is to see where it sits next to the people you may already work with.

Sound Familiar?

Signs it is time to bring in a CFO.

You do not need to be a large company to need financial leadership. You need it the moment your decisions get bigger than your spreadsheet.

We are growing, but I have no idea if we can actually afford to hire.
I build a hiring and cash flow model so you know exactly what you can afford, and when.
I look at my P&L every month and still cannot make a decision with it.
I translate your statements into a handful of numbers that actually drive the business.
I am profitable on paper, but there is never money in the bank.
I find the gap between profit and cash, then fix the leaks that cause it.
I need financing, but I do not know what a lender wants to see.
I prepare bank ready projections and packages that get applications approved.
Cash feels tight even during my good months.
I forecast your cash position weeks ahead, so a shortfall never catches you off guard.
My board keeps asking questions I cannot answer fast enough.
I build board ready dashboards and reporting, so every meeting is calm and prepared.

What You Get

What a fractional CFO actually delivers.

Every engagement is built around your goals. Here is the toolkit I draw from, in plain English.

Cash Flow Forecasting

A rolling view of the money coming in and going out, so you always know what next month looks like before it arrives.

Budgeting & Planning

A realistic annual budget you can actually follow, plus a simple way to see budget versus actual every month.

KPI Dashboards

The three to five numbers that truly run your business, on one clear dashboard you can read at a glance.

Financial Modeling

Scenario planning that answers "what if." What if I raise prices, add staff, or open a second location?

Profit & Margin Analysis

A clear look at which products, services, and clients make money, and which quietly drain it.

Financing Readiness

Loan and investor ready projections, packaged the way lenders expect, tied directly to my lending services.

Board & Investor Reporting

Clean, board ready reports and narratives, so leadership meetings start with answers instead of questions.

Systems & Controls

The right tools, workflows, and safeguards, so your financial operation runs smoothly as you grow.

Who It Is For

Built for the moment things get complicated.

Fractional CFO support makes the most sense when your business or organization is at a turning point.

Growing small businesses

Roughly $100K to $10M in revenue, where the decisions are getting bigger and gut feel is no longer enough.

Nonprofits and community organizations

Groups that need a strategic, treasurer level financial partner for budgets, grants, and board reporting. I serve as Treasurer of a 501(c)(3), so I know this from the inside.

Founders preparing to raise or borrow

Owners getting ready to apply for a loan, an SBA program, or investment, who need projections that hold up under scrutiny.

Owners planning a big move

A major hire, a new location, an expansion, or a future sale. Any decision worth modeling before you commit the cash.

Transparent Pricing

Senior financial leadership, right sized to you.

Every business is different, so I price every engagement on a case by case basis. The tiers below are starting points that reflect common scenarios. Your actual quote is built around your situation, and you always see it in writing before any work begins.

No One Fits Perfectly In The Same Box

Your quote is built for your business, not a template.

I do not believe in one size fits all pricing. Two businesses with the same revenue can need very different levels of support. That is why I assess every engagement individually and quote you around the work you actually need, nothing more.

How fractional CFO pricing works

It helps to know the market before you compare quotes. In 2026, most fractional CFOs charge either by the hour (roughly $175 to $450) or on a fixed monthly retainer. For small and mid sized businesses, those retainers typically land between $5,000 and $7,500 a month, and can run higher for complex or high growth companies.

I work on a monthly retainer rather than by the hour on purpose. It ties my success to your outcomes, not to a clock. You never have to think twice about a quick call or a fast question, because you are paying for results and judgment, not billable minutes.

Where your number lands inside the market depends on a handful of real factors, listed here. We work through them together on your free call, then I send a written proposal within 24 hours.

What shapes your quote

The five things I weigh for every engagement.

  • Revenue and stageA steady $500K business and a fast scaling $8M business need different support.
  • ComplexityMultiple entities, locations, grant funding, or investor reporting all add depth.
  • Scope of workLight monthly oversight versus full forecasting, modeling, and board prep.
  • Timeline and urgencyA calm ongoing partnership versus a fast turnaround for financing or a deadline.
  • Condition of your booksClean, current books cost less to build on than records that need cleanup first.

The Real Math

A full CFO's judgment, at a fraction of the cost.

Hiring a Chief Financial Officer full time is out of reach for most growing businesses. Fractional support gives you the same senior thinking, scaled to what you actually need.

Bottom line: I assess every engagement case by case. The tiers above are starting points, not boxes. Multi entity businesses, nonprofits with grant funding, seasonal companies, and turnaround situations all receive a custom proposal built around their actual needs. You will always see your full quote in writing before any work begins, and you will never be surprised by a bill.

Common Questions

Answers before you have to ask.

How is a fractional CFO different from my accountant or bookkeeper?

Your bookkeeper records what already happened and your accountant reports and files it. A fractional CFO looks forward. I use your numbers to forecast cash, plan budgets, model decisions, and guide strategy. The roles work together, they do not replace each other.

Do I have to leave my current bookkeeper or accountant?

Not at all. I am happy to work alongside your existing team and simply add the strategic layer on top. If you would prefer one firm to handle everything, I can also manage your bookkeeping, accounting, and tax under one roof.

Is my business big enough to need a CFO?

If you are making decisions that involve real money (hiring, borrowing, expanding, pricing) then you are big enough to benefit. Most clients come to me somewhere between $100K and $10M in revenue, but the right time is really about complexity, not size.

How much of my time does this take?

Very little. Most of the work happens on my side. Your main commitment is a monthly or twice monthly strategy call, plus quick questions in between. The goal is to save you time, not add to your plate.

Do you offer fractional CFO support to nonprofits?

Yes. Nonprofits are a core part of my work. I provide budgeting, grant and fund oversight, and board ready reporting. I also serve as Treasurer of a 501(c)(3), so I understand the responsibilities from both sides of the table.

Is everything really virtual?

Yes. I serve clients across all 50 states through secure video calls, cloud based document sharing, and online financial systems. Location is never a barrier to getting senior financial guidance.
