Is Your Bookkeeping Ready for Year-End? 8 Questions to Ask Before December

The end of the year is the moment your bookkeeping either works for you or against you. Clean books make tax season smoother, decisions clearer and conversations with your tax professional faster. Books that have slipped make all of that harder.

The good news: you don't need to be a bookkeeper to know where you stand. Start by asking yourself these eight questions.

1. Are my business transactions categorized? Uncategorized transactions are like unlabeled boxes in a move. Everything's technically there, but you can't find what you need.

2. Is my income properly recorded? Every payment you've received should be accounted for, including the ones that came through apps, transfers or cash.

3. Are my business expenses up to date? If expenses are months behind, your numbers can make the business look more or less profitable than it really is.

4. Are my bank accounts reconciled? Reconciling means confirming your books match your bank statements. It's how you catch errors, missing transactions and duplicates.

5. Are my business and personal expenses separated? Mixing accounts is one of the most common bookkeeping problems we see. It makes records messier and decisions harder.

6. Do I have receipts or documentation for major expenses? If a significant purchase ever comes into question, documentation is your best friend.

7. Do I know whether my books are currently accurate? "I think so" isn't the same as "yes." If you're not sure, that's worth knowing.

8. Do I know when my bookkeeping was last updated? If the honest answer is "I'd have to check," it's probably been a while.

If you answered "no" or "not sure" more than once

Take a breath. Falling behind doesn't mean you failed at business. It means you need a system that helps you catch up and stay caught up.

Don't try to fix the whole year in one night. Start small:

  1. Pick one recent month.

  2. Gather your bank and card records for that month.

  3. List what's missing, then decide whether to tackle it yourself or ask for help.

One caught-up month is real progress, and it shows you how big the catch-up actually is.
